Our Heritage

Our Story

From Addis Ababa to Footscray

Yetenbi was born from a simple belief: that the best meals are the ones shared. Our name means "the chosen one" — a reminder that every guest who walks through our door is chosen to be part of our family, even if just for one evening.

We opened our doors on Barkly Street with one mission: to bring the true taste of Ethiopia to Melbourne's west. Every recipe we serve comes from our grandmother's kitchen in Addis Ababa, passed down through generations and perfected over decades.

The Coffee Ceremony

The Ethiopian coffee ceremony, or Buna, is the heart of our culture. It is not merely about drinking coffee — it is about community, conversation, and connection. At Yetenbi, we perform the ceremony daily, roasting green beans over an open flame and brewing them slowly in a traditional clay Jebena.

Three rounds are served: Abol, Tona, and Baraka. Each round carries its own blessing. The ceremony is accompanied by the burning of frankincense, filling the room with an aroma that transports you straight to the highlands of Ethiopia.
